KOTA KINABALU: Newly crowned Miss Sabah Malaysia World 2010 Jassinta Mirasol will use her knowledge in tourism to promote Sabah.
Jassinta, 23, who holds a BA in Hospitality Management from Universiti Tun Abdul Razak (UNITAR), Selangor also aspires to become a well-known model besides helping to enhance the image of Sabah to tourists.
“My long-term ambition is become a model but with my qualifications from UNITAR I want to promote Sabah too,” said the girl of Bisaya Dusun heritage from Tawau.
Jassinta won the state-level grand final of Miss Sabah Malaysia World held at the 1Borneo Grand Ballroom on Saturday night.
The pageant, themed ‘Beauty with a Purpose’, brought together 15 beautiful and talented young ladies aged between 18 to 25 to select and crown Miss Sabah Malaysia World.
Jassinta received her Miss Sabah Malaysia World 2010 crown from reigning queen Miss Sabah Malaysia World 2009, Marie Bibiana Baxter, at the climax of the pageant about half an hour before midnight.
Jassinta also won the Miss Body Beautiful title.
The Miss Sabah Malaysia World 2010 first runner-up was Vanessa Samantha Manih, 22, of Penampang while second runner-up was Wendy Radin Malleh, 24, of Tenom.
Third runner-up was Leonie Lawrence Gontuni, 21, of Penampang and 20-year-old Michelle Lai Foong Yee of Penampang was named fourth runner-up.
Subsidiary titles in six other categories went to Leonie Lawrence Gontuni as Miss Photogenic; Imelda George as Miss Best Catwalk; Noemi Halima Dingle Ligunjang as Miss Elegant; Felicia Khor Kah Hui as Miss Beautiful Skin; Lam Fei Teng as Miss Adidas; and Wendy Radin Malleh as Miss Congeniality 1Borneo.
The winner took home RM15,000 worth of prizes, first runner-up RM10,000, and second runner-up RM5,000 with RM500 worth of consolation prizes each for the rest.
Meanwhile, Jassinta said she did not expect to win the contest at all.
“I feel so happy, I feel like crying, I really didn’t expect to win this title, the other contestants were so great,” she told reporters after being crowned Miss Sabah Malaysia World.
“This is the first beauty contest that I have won. I took part in the Unduk Ngadau contest back in Tawau in 2005 but I didn’t win,” said Jassinta, the fourth child in a family.
When asked about what her winning points were, Jassinta said it was her confidence that got her through.
“I believe it was my public speaking skill that won the judges. I just felt so confident on stage,” she said. “I’d like to thank all other contestants for giving me encouragement throughout the contest.”
Jassinta will represent Sabah in the national level Miss Malaysia World in Kuala Lumpur this year.
The panel of judges included former state deputy secretary Datuk Claudius Roman, Dolly Jimayol, former 1982 State level Unduk Ngadau, Christopher Sim, HSBC Bank Malaysia Berhad business banking manager, Emily Chong, assistant vice president of Kota Kinabalu United Overseas Bank (M) Bhd, and Ani Mohd. Ridzuan, principal of Nuvis Beauty Institute.
The event was organised by Asia Pro Entertainment with Datuk Dr. Robert De Souza as state franchise holder. Mayor Datuk Iliyas Ibrahim was guest of honour for the night.
Meanwhile, organising chairman Victor Gerard Kuasi said the pageant exists for the purpose of enhancing the participants’ self-image and confidence while encouraging them to become responsible and caring citizens by doing charitable work.
The pageant will also prepare the winner as future ambassador for the state, he added.
At the event, Don Bosco Children’s Home and Puspanita Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu each received RM10,000 as donation.
