TORONTO, ONTARIO - June 14th - Elena Semikina (R), a 26-year old model from Toronto, was crowned Miss Universe Canada 2010 out of 62 beauties competing for the title. The contest took place at the Metro Toronto Convention Center on June 14th.

The 1st runner-up was Aleksandra Malkin, while the 2nd runner-up was the Cree community representative, Ashley Callingbull. Neda Derakhshanfar and Zarah Al-Aubiydy completed the Top 5 finalists.

As a new trend in beauty pageants, this year edition of Miss Universe Canada was not free of controversy. Yemeni-born Maria Al-Masani made headlines when declaring she would cover herself up during the swimsuit competition; then, newscasts had a field day when contestant Tiffany Munro linked poverty and malnutrition with Africa; and finally, Sophie Froment, from Montreal, was disqualified after it was discovered she shot a video campaign -nude- for a website that encourages extramarital affairs.

1.86 m tall Elena will now represent Canada at the 2010 Miss Universe contest in Las Vegas, on August 23rd.

Zhanna Shishko

Being a Ukrainian-born Canadian in Toronto, Zhanna has faced and overcame the challenge associated with moving to another country at the age of seven. These included language and cultural barriers that led to not being able to 'fit in'. She struggled with and endured this learning experience, gradually absorbing the new culture and social norms that shaped her as an individual.

Zhanna has devoted seven years to higher education, as a result completed a Bachelor's of Sociology and Linguistics, a Specialist in Law and a Master's of Business Management. During her schooling, social studies played an important role in her life. She quickly was drawn towards the socio-economic issues presented in the world today. At the end of her studies she decided that contributing to the aiding of upholding human rights, establishing a greater awareness of victims of social injustice and abuse was the social scale that she felt empathetic about.

Zhanna has been volunteering as a coach and a guidance councillor of children at the UNF Shotokan Karate-Do Academy since 2005. Such position has mainly contributed to her compassion for children. Zhanna has gained important skills and thorough understanding of educational and guiding processes that are required when dealing with students and children. In addition, this role has disciplined her as a black belt martial artist, gave her flexibility of thought and a diplomatic approach in interpersonal liaison and communication.

Zhanna's goal is to address the Nations, bring amplified awareness to the victims of poverty, child abuse, violence, suppressed human rights and discrimination. In addition, Zhanna believes that proper corrections must be made to improve the state of the environment, as not only do we already feel the impact of those throes, but younger and future generations that do not have a vote on the matter, will be effected by the consequences of our current decision to act or dismiss.

Going forward, Zhanna is striving to utilize her philanthropy character, educational background, and life experience to contribute to the social welfare of the human world.
Zhanna has a cohesive desire to advance morally and professionally to a level that would allow her to become a humanitarian and an influential figure, where she would be able to collaborate with organizations and charities within a framework of common values and goals, upholding human rights through transparent and peaceful programs world-wide.

Besides participating in the Martial Arts competitions while being in my teens, I have also played volleyball, basketball, baseball, Hockey, but the most enjoyable is still mountain climbing because it is a challenge where a high level of concentration and endurance is required.

What charity/charities have you supported with your time and/or resources over past two years?

Together with my family we have supported charities in Canada and Ukraine. Canadian Liver Foundation; Canadian Death Sport Association; Canadian Police Association, Canadian Cancer Society, Canadian Police Association “Children Christmas Fond”, are some of them. My family and I also supported charities involved in aiding the victims of Natural Disasters: Haiti earthquake, hurricane Katrina.
On a side note, I would like to share my personal experience. In the summer time when I would visit Ukraine, a simple donation of clothes and toys established an awesome connection between a few of the children that I had given special attention to and even taught them Karate. This was a heartfelt contribution; I was giving them a fundamental positive direction that will perhaps eventually shape their character.

What would be your "dream job" in life?

I strongly see myself as a goodwill ambassador. This is a priceless job that opens up the opportunity to make substantial adjustments to the social system; Improve the relationship between Nations; Representing a World reduced of poverty, suffering and chaos.
I would accumulate my effort, education, skills and amplified ability to bring efficiency, abundance and sustainability. Simultaneously my awareness grows with the rising environmental challenges that we are facing. I believe that if change is not implemented soon, our children, and future generations, will have to pay the consequences in which they did not have a vote.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life? Why?

There were many outstanding people in my life that really made a positive impact. I would like to thank all of them. But I would like to acknowledge and specially thank a prominent scientist in Ukraine, who I personally know and had spent much time with collaborating in different fields of research throughout my years in the academia:
Gregory Shneiderman, a physician, mathematician, biologist and a philosopher, who participated in many researches, profound projects and experiments. He is also an author of: “Above the Horizon of the Unconscious World”. In his studies he has shown the connection between life sciences and pure sciences. He introduced a new perception of life to me where Men, Nature and Energy unite, and where the Future can be created by a positive human mind.

What is the proudest personal accomplishment (other than being in this or any other beauty pageant competition)

One of the proudest personal accomplishments would be completing my Master’s degree. As I have devoted rigorous effort towards it. This accomplishment not only disciplined me but also served as an educational rudiment where a wealth of knowledge can be applied and utilized in the direction of progress.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

My career ambition is to be part of something great: Being the embodiment of a firm, wilful and progressive individual, who would not only serve as a role model to younger audiences, but also have influence in the social arena of the world as a goodwill ambassador, a spokesperson for charitable events and social-aid organizations.
In the effort of accomplishing that, I started off by devoting seven years to the Academia, because I believe that Scientia potentia est. Knowledge is power. I understand that to be most effective in any career, knowledge is the benchmark.
The next step would be a more difficult one: To utilize the knowledge, experience that are ever-expanding and directing them to the meaningful purpose.
One of the most important counts that would aid me in accomplishing that meaningful purpose is this Miss Universe Canada contest.
Therefore, I am accumulating my resourcefulness and effort in the hope of accomplishing a greater merit on a greater scale.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was raised both, in Toronto, Ontario and in Kiev, Ukraine. As a child I was exposed to different cultures and mentalities. I lived in Kiev and Toronto for almost an equal amount of years. I grew up in a family with a father of a law enforcing background, and a mother that is an engineer mechanic. Although, often their two diverse educational backgrounds didn’t bring them to a common denominator in opinions, high morals and values still unite them infinitely.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

My unforgettable job was in Los Angeles, California. My job entailed to watch over an elder man that was recuperating in the hospital for already nine months after a lung transplant surgery. I was a caregiver, some of my duties included keeping track of his blood pressure, heart rate and making sure that all the doctors do assist him as they are scheduled. He was in a very extreme condition. My empathy grew for this person. The only thing that I could give him, asides from the expectations of the job, were the signs of hope and compassion, which was very important to him.
There is another quite interesting job that I had, it took place in Europe, I was a project manager at a construction site. I found it enjoyable, handling large capacity of managerial obligations. It gave me a wonderful leadership experience and a good understanding of responsibility and adequate decision- making.
List any volunteering you have done.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Among many interesting places on Earth, my avidity keeps appraising Canada, specifically British Colombia. What fascinates me the most is the versatile landscapes, the diverse climate: Whistler- the rainforest where it snows. The natural beauty is spoiling to the eye with rugged mountains that rise out of the ocean floor.

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?

I strongly believe that the content of my values, traits and creativity of my character make me unique and different: the genuine and unconditional desire to help others in despair; my capability to look beyond the silhouettes of the reality; look past prejudice and bias, leap over the precipice of stereotypical comprehension; dive into the core of the problem, gather the compendium of information, analyze it with necessary expertise and advance from that point.

What is your philosophy of/in life?

Integrity, dignity, pride, honour, progress, evolution – those are the stems of my philosophy of life. Whatever you do in life, those rudiments should accommodate as guiding principles of one’s actions. Living by them will ensure a health state of mind, healthy body and finally a health planet.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?

In 10 years I hope to advance morally and professionally to a level that would allow me to become a role model, an influential figure where I will be able to cooperate with organizations Worldwide within a framework of common values and goals, upholding fundamental human rights through transparent and peaceful programs worldwide.

Is there anything you would like to tell us about yourself? Something unique that has happened to you? Some interesting thing about you?

I was a witness of a small disaster. I had visited a public, unmaintained and abandoned area near the ocean. My friends and I camped, BBQ swam in the ocean and practised karate and yoga many times. To me this area was serendipity, a little paradise to escape the city. It was a public place, yet not many were aware of its existence. I’ve grown emotionally attached to it in a robust way. I took care of the abandoned cabins, tided up the place. Gradually, I hadn’t visited it as often. Nonetheless, every time I did get out to this remote location, I kept noticing signs of manmade destruction. Asides from the bottles and garbage left on the premises, the plastic bag windows that were put up by my friends and myself were ripped, wood from the stairs was disappearing.
Eventually, in the couple of months that I was absent, I allocated time to visit the lost little getaway. To my unpleasant surprise, all that was left before my eyes were ruins.
The place was robbed of its comforts and beauty. Trees close by were cut, the cabins nearly scavenged to the ground.

I was told that some locals tore the whole place down in pursue of cedar sidings. I was devastated and somewhat angered at the same time. Here is where I started to evaluate the situation: I was shocked by what people are capable of. How cruel and shallow must one be to tear down a "little paradise"? Where are the values? Why not make improvements and try to maintain the place instead of causing destruction?
But on the other hand, the people were obviously deprived of a sustainable life.
This pushed me to be more versatile and flexible in my revelations. Were the presumably guilty of the destruction deprived of basic means to sustainability, or were they deprived of morals and values? What lead them to this "scavenge”? The conditions that society placed them in, or did they place themselves into these conditions? This is an interesting example of a situation that contributed to a trait in my character which is not to jump to a swift conclusion, but rather collect all the data and possibilities that emerge from a circumstance.

Miss Universe Canada 2010 Contestant - Zahra Al-Aubiydy's Photo & Profile/Biodata

Zahra Al-Aubiydy

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: ORLEANS, ON

At the ripe age of 12 Zahra Al-Aubiydy was introduced to Free the Children, an organization of kids dedicated to fighting against child labour. Always having been empathetic towards those in vulnerable positions Zahra was deeply affected by those who were suffering around the world. Thanks to Free the Children she realized that there are neither boundaries nor excuses when it comes to impacting the world in a positive way.

In elementary school she was a part of her first club that supported the developing world, ‘’kids helping kids”. In high school, she went on to found Global Reach, another organization dedicated to educating her peers on issues around the world, and helping to support both the local, and global communities. In 2008 Zahra spearheaded a fundraiser for her native land of Iraq in collaboration with Walk for Iraq & UNICEF raising thousands of dollars. In university she was a part of countless clubs and societies, but her most passionate project as of late has been ‘Students to End Extreme Poverty’ (STEEP).

STEEP is a dedicated group of remarkable young people at Carleton University that spent the latter part of last year working on an election campaign to get their student body to vote yes to support a levy of 6 dollars to go towards supporting a Millennium Village. Having succeeded, the Carleton student body now raises 100+ thousand dollars annually to support a self-sustainable village in sub-Saharan Africa.

Zahra’s intense passion to impact the world has set her on a path to do just that! In the fall of 2009 Zahra was privileged enough to attend the G8 strategy session meeting as a volunteer. There, she witnessed the worlds NGO’s come together in Ottawa, to strategize an action plan for the World! At the conference Zahra had the opportunity to share STEEP’s story, and explain about the student levy and success of the election campaign. She was amazed at the support she received from the World’s foremost active workers in the field of international development.

Her goal is to raise the profile of STEEP as well as the Millennium Villages in order to gain them support from every Canadian Student. When the time comes, she hopes that every university and college across Canada will be prepared to Vote YES to supporting a Millennium Village, and together potentially raise an accumulated $10 million + dollars annually! With Zahra’s passion and ambition, she will continue to inspire and influence others to actively seek change in today’s world.

I am currently enrolled at the Ontario Real Estate Association College in Toronto studying; you guessed it, the Real Estate profession. I am doing these courses through correspondence though, as I am currently living in Orleans.

I speak English and Arabic fluently, however I have made it a goal of mine to learn the greetings of as many languages as possible! Bonjour! Hola! Oy! Jambo! Ni-hao ma! Kalimara! Ciao! Cheshch! Sasri Ka! Zdravo! Kakdi-la! And hopefully one day every other languages greeting!

I learned to play the trumpet in elementary school, and was even in a brass ensemble in those days.
In high school I was part of the dance team for a year where we did hip hop.
I took ballroom dancing during the summer of 2008 with my best friend Auda!
Have taken Latin Dance classes (Salsa, Merengue, Bachata) for 3 years now, and occasionally help teach basic Latin dance steps at special events.
I took a course on Traditional African Dance at York University in 2007.
I took art classes in elementary and high school, and am blessed to have a very gifted family of artists, whom I’ve had the privilege to be inspired by especially my uncle, Amer Alobaidi!

The main initiative that I’ve been I’ve been involved with since 2008 is Students to End Extreme Poverty (STEEP): In 2009 we were able to institutionalize a student levy of 6$ per student at Carleton University, allowing us to raise an annual sum of $100 + thousand dollars to go towards Millennium Villages (run by Millennium Promise Project.)
Millennium Promise Project: Works towards achieving the millennium development goals through their work in establishing self-sustainable villages in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In 2008 I spearheaded a national fundraiser for Children through ‘Walk for Iraq’ in Collaboration with ‘UNICEF’
Currently A colleague and I are organizing a fundraising race to raise money for disability to go towards Can Aid Africa.
Csiy Iraq- Sponsored a family of 4 orphans in Iraq with a group of friends.
STAND UP Campaign: Promoted the Stand Up to End Extreme Poverty Campaign within Carleton University (with STEEP) and were able to get 3% of our student population to take the pledge, which coincided with the 3% of the World’s population who also took the pledge!!
Tck Tck Tck Campaign: Joined the World Wide demonstration for environmental sustainability by helping to fill parliament hill.

What would be your "dream job" in life?

My dream job would be a position where I would be able to have a deep human connection with the people of the world. The position would allow me to influence society, especially the younger generation, to be more empathetic towards those who are less fortunate, as well as to be more aware of the state of our planet, so that when it is our turn to run our planet we can do so consciously and with great care. Furthermore if our generation is able to set the example from now, then that will in turn affect all the generations to come as well.

My ultimate dream job will allow me to have left the world in a better state than it is now, with my main goal (at this point in time) being to eradicating extreme poverty because the evidence shows that it can be done, and therefore there is no excuse to not getting it done.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life? Why?
People have asked me before what set me on the path that I’m on now, and thinking back, it was always inherent in me to defended those who were vulnerable around me, but it wasn’t until I met Craig Kielburger when I was 12 and heard him tell his story at the Free the Children Conference that I really discovered how to channel that energy.
I believe that because I was so young at the time of the conference and learned of the injustices of the world, I became much more attached to the cause of trying to do my part. Craig Kielburger being 12 himself at the time he started his journey and Free the Children, showed me that there are no boundaries or limits to the changes and influence you can make and have on people! Not age, nor gender, nor location can stop you from following what you believe in and making a difference. Because of him, ever since that point in my life I have always had a passion for making a difference especially in the developing world.

What is the proudest personal accomplishment (other than being in this or any other beauty pageant competition)

The proudest moment of my life was the day I saw all of my hard work single-handedly organizing the Walk for Iraq in Collaboration with UNICEF come to life. At the beginning of my endeavour I wasn’t sure how or if I could pull off the fundraiser, but after 8 months of hard work 6 months of those by myself, it finally happened! At that point I knew that I could accomplish anything I set my mind to.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I intend to get into public relations with an NGO, and advocate for international development causes with the intention of influencing as many people all over the world as possible. After MUC I intend to get a diploma in Public relations/marketing, then go on to finish my international development studies degree in order to have the required credentials.

I am a very ambitious person however so I will never be limited by a single career. I am currently getting my real estate license in order to get into the real estate market. I am also an entrepreneur with many business ideas in mind which I am getting ready to start up once the right time presents itself.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
To be honest this is probably one of the hardest questions for me to answer, but I’m going to do my best.

I was 3 years old when my family and I first moved to Canada after fleeing from the 2nd gulf war. We lived in a tiny suburb called Brossard outside of Montreal, but because of language barriers we moved to Toronto. I lived in Scarborough, North York for 4 years, and then we finally settled in Markham by grade 5.

Because I moved around a lot I was use to making new friends, and because Scarborough, and North York were both very multicultural it was much easier to do so than in Markham. When I moved to Markham in grade 5, the cultural atmosphere was very different, and one I was not use to, nor ever got use to until after I graduated high school.

I have always had very strong ideals and beliefs from an early age and because I never compromised my beliefs, I did not always fit in with everyone else. Thankfully I was fortunate enough to have grown up with my best friend, who remains to this day one of my closest friends Auda Tam, who even though now lives in Idaho has remained my strongest pillars in upholding my beliefs.

When I was 16 I decided to move to Ottawa to live with my brother for a school year just to get away from Markham for a while. That was the most significant growing experience in my childhood. That was the time when I really blossomed and truly accepted and learned to love myself, and have confidence beyond a doubt that I was a good human being and if anyone else had a problem with me, then it was due to their own insecurities.

I am so grateful for the childhood that I experienced because it made me a much stronger human being, and at the same time acutely empathetic towards people who are different and vulnerable.

I believe in karma, and I believe I’m getting my good karma at this stage of my life, and I feel that I have an obligation to use what I have been blessed with which is a history, personality, and passion to affect positive change.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.
I worked at an Engraving kiosk once, and was consistently touched by the personal messages that people would get engraved on their items. Some of the most touching messages came from guys my age to their girlfriends.
Here are 2 messages that I’ll never forget:

“Forever your lover, always your best friend, Love ...”
This guy bought a pewter rose for his girlfriend and on the rose came a pendent which he got engraved with: “A rose to last as long as our love”
Those moments made the job for me, and also restored my faith in knowing that chivalry is not dead!

Where is the most interesting place you have been?
Egypt! The culture in Egypt is fascinating. The quality of people that I met there was unbelievable. My cousin lives in Alexandria and I stayed with her for 3 week in 2007 and was blown away. The lifestyle is so different, from the minute you wake up, to the time you go to bed, to what you do for fun, to what defines a friendship, to absolutely everything.
There was poverty yes, and crowded streets, and everyone smokes, and you have to run to the car when leaving the house, but among all of that I still fell in love with the country and the people.
There is lots of work that can be done to improve the conditions of the poor there I’m sure, but in terms of a society we could probably take some lessons.

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?
I have a PLAN!
Most pageant contestants have a cause that they are passionate about, but what makes me different, is that not only do I have a passion for a cause, but I also and MOST importantly have a plan to make a significant impact.

My cause is simple: To help eradicate extreme poverty by 2025 by working with STEEP and the Millennium Promise Project to fund Millennium Villages throughout Sub-Saharan Africa which work to become SELF-SUSTAINABLE within 5 years.

How: By raising the profile of STEEP and the Millennium Villages in order to get as many elections running in universities, and colleges as possible, and furthermore ensuring that the students to vote yes to supporting Millennium Villages through a small student levy.

(Carleton University’s success means 100+ thousand dollars annually, if we can get most of Canada to replicate Carleton University’s success, we could see a potential 10 million dollars every year to go towards directly saving hundreds of thousands of lives, as well as all the future generations to come within the self-sustainable villages!
By 2025 this could mean that we as Canadian Students could potentially contribute almost a quarter of a billion dollars to go towards eradicating extreme poverty!)

I hope to be living a happy and fulfilled life knowing that I have accomplished all that I have set out to do.

I was an accident! My mom had her tubes tied and against all odds, I still managed to come to life! I believe I’m here for a reason, and I intend to follow my instincts and passions until I achieve what I have set out to do! Miss Universe Canada 2010 Contestant - Tiffany Munro's Photo & Profile/Biodata

Tiffany Munro

Tiffany Munro is successful with overcoming adversities and challenges. As a child, she diagnosed with dyslexia, she was overweight, and suffered from low self esteem. Her strong will and perseverance has allowed her to succeed in all of her endeavors. Today she is an accomplished film maker and model, recently gracing the front page of the Vancouver Sun.

Tiffany enjoys traveling the world, but always returns home, to her birthplace, Edmonton, Alberta. Her Scottish and East Indian heritage, has allowed her to appreciate people from various cultural backgrounds. Her passion for the arts emerged early and manifested into acting and art classes. She excelled in the sciences after being exposed to the intricacies of computers and electronics by her father.

While attending the Computer Sciences program at the University of Alberta, she realized that her love for the arts was too strong to ignore. Combining her passion for arts and sciences, she enrolled and graduated from the Vancouver Film School. Tiffany was awarded a special Jury award for a short film entitled, “Grave Consequences” at the LA Shorts Festival. With an ambitious desire to educate and help people, she created “Filmfluential”, a production company based in Alberta & British Columbia. She has produced and directed several films including a current documentary film that focuses on the health care crisis in Ethiopia.

Tiffany is an active member of her community and is extensively involved with organizations such as, Rotary and Toastmasters. She donates freely of her time and energy to exposing new audiences to global issues through documentary films. She has charitably donated video production resources, participated in charity fashion shows and has provided soccer balls to underprivileged children in Ethiopia. Her current endeavor finds her volunteering with a literacy program in an elementary school, something she can strongly relate to having lived with dyslexia since childhood.

Tiffany considers children to be our greatest resource. She believes, collectively we need to refocus resources and our attention to improving the communication between educators and youth. She plans to direct her energy and expertise, to develop programs that focus on childhood issues such as, mental health, body image and literacy. These are three very important and influential areas that Tiffany believes parents, educators and society should continuously strive to improve.

Growing up my dream job was to become a film director, I am living that dream, part of this dream is to one day win an Academy Award for making a documentary film that would change they way we see the world.

My elder sister Natasha has had the most influence on my life. Due to our vast age difference, she has been a role model and strong supporter of me since childhood.

She is a strong, beautiful and a big-hearted woman. She is independent, has four children, and works full time in real estate. Her involvement with various charities over the years has inspired me to become more involved. She always takes the initiative, providing gloves and hoodies to homeless teens in Edmonton along with starting a meal program for a school in Namibia.

Her actions have changed my life and has inspired me to make a difference in the world.

I have many personal accomplishments I am proud of. My proudest is overcoming low self esteem caused by childhood weight problems and dyslexia. Understanding and overcoming these challenges has made me a stronger, more determined person. I realized that I am an intelligent and beautiful person, despite my childhood physical and learning challenges.


WHAT IS YOUR CAREER AMBITION AND WHAT ARE YOU DOING OR PLAN
TO DO TO ACCOMPLISH THAT GOAL?

My career ambition is to produce documentaries that will impact how we educate children. My focus is on helping children with self-esteem and learning disabilities with emphasis on mental and physical health. Children are our greatest resource, we can change the world by refocusing how we educate our children.
My documentaries will increase awareness and focus on educating parents, teachers and children how to recognized and overcome obesity, dyslexia and bullying which is prevalent globally. I am currently working with a group teaching film workshops to children with dyslexia and I am in the development stages of a series on dyslexia.

DESCRIBE WHERE YOU WERE RAISED AND WHAT YOUR CHILDHOOD
WAS LIKE.
I was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. My mother is a successful realtor in Edmonton for the past 29 years. My father was employed with the Alberta Government. My parents believed that
traveling was an excellent form of education. They influenced and fuelled my desire to see the
world. Embracing new cultures, learning though life experiences and exchanging ideas. "Learn something new everyday my mom told me and share your knowledge with others". Family was important to my parents, so growing up I was fortunate to be around aunts, uncles, grandparents and cousins. Strong family values were instilled at an early age. We shared Sunday family dinners for so many years to this day we still connect on Sundays even by telephone.

I struggled with a learning disability known as dyslexia that combined with a weight problem provided untold challenges for me throughout my childhood. With my parents support, I persevered and prevailed. Their words still ring in my ears today,"if I had tried my best" and "you are beautiful to us" that was all that mattered.

In Junior High I went from a failing student to an honour student. By grade 9, I graduated honours with distinction. I always pushed myself to do better, even though I struggled to read and write. By the time I graduated from grade 12, I had won an award for a poem I had written on women's rights entitled "Equality" and placed first in Computer Sciences at the Edmonton Science Fair (I went on to represent Edmonton at the National Science Fair). I also completed a summer internship at the University of Alberta. Despite the challenges I was fortunate to have a well rounded and interesting childhood.

LIST ANY INTERESTING OR UNUSUAL JOBS YOU MAY HAVE HAD.

For a couple of years I worked in real estate with my family. It was a unique opportunity to meet new people. On a number of different occasions, it provided me with the opportunity to host my mother’s TV segment “Million Dollar Homes” on Edmonton CityTV’s “Your City”.

For the past three years I have worked in film, directing and producing. I have worked on interesting and sometimes unusual films, ranging from medical documentaries to a “mockumentary” about “Surviving your First Film Festival”. The scariest part for me was being interviewed on live television by the major networks for a film I won an award for.

Modeling has always been fun and interesting. I have been on the front page of the Vancouver Sun, walked runway shows here and in the United States as well as being featured in various fashion articles and television features. I am very proud to currently be the face of DuJour Boutique. These have all been interesting and unusual jobs for me.

LIST ANY VOLUNTEERING YOU HAVE DONE.
As a teenager I volunteered at the local SPCA, as well as nursing homes and a women’s shelter through my Junior High.

For the past 2 years I have volunteered with ENHAPA (Ethiopia North American Health Professionals Association), the BC High School Bhangra Dance Competition as well as participating in various charity fashion shows including the Children’s SOS Foundation this past year.

I am currently volunteering with a child literacy program supportedby a Rotary Club, as well as participating in the club’s other charitable events.

WHERE IS THE MOST INTERESTING PLACE YOU HAVE BEEN?

I have been fortunate to travel to Australia, Croatia, Serbia, Greece, Ethiopia, Germany, Ireland, Wales, England, Scotland, Italy, Mexico, France, the Netherlands, United States and Canada.
It is difficult to choose but the most interesting and fascinating place I have ever been is the top of Mount Entoto in Ethiopia.

There I met a group of boys that walk all the way down the mountain in broken shoes every morning to attend school. They are an amazing group of boys despite having nothing, they are so happy. When I visited them on my first trip to Ethiopia, I noticed that they had beautiful soccer fields, which were not being used. They told me the fields were not used because they did not have any soccer balls. I returned a few days later with a dozen soccer balls. I have never seen children so happy in my life. I returned a year later to visit them and to give them photographs from the first trip. One of the boys was missing and none of them wanted to talk about it. Finally one of the parents told me that the boy had passed away from tuberculosis (TB) a few months before. They took me to meet the boy's mother and I gave her the photo album, which had lots of photographs of her son. She was so overcome with joy, she invited me into her little hut. They are the only photographs she has of her son. Such a small gesture changed her life and mine. The boys of Mount Entoto will always be in my heart. They were so happy, despite having nothing, something that is rare in North America.

WHAT MAKES YOU UNIQUE AND DIFFERENT FROM THE OTHER
CONTESTANTS?

What makes us all unique and different are the challenges and experience we encounter throughout our lives. I am unique and different for several reasons. I have lived with the challenges of dyslexia, a disorder that affects my ability to read and write since childhood. Combined with being bullied and peer pressure in school from being overweight makes me truly unique and different. Help is still not readily available to children who face these challenges. I graduated from post-secondary school despite these challenges and have achieved success that most people would think impossible. To be a role model for young children and people in general, I want to use my unique experiences to help young children everywhere. True beauty comes from within, it is not a cliche'. Education and sharing of knowledge and experiences can make a difference. I see the difference in the children I am working with and want to continue sharing my personal experiences to improve the lives of others, even if its one person at a time.

I have traveled the world. I have been to countries that most North Americans do not have the desire to see, nor opportunity to visit. I have seen poverty and war torn cities in person, something that most Canadians only see on CNN. It was a life changing experience for me.

My colorful heritage is truly unique. My mother is from Trinidad, but her heritage is East Indian. My father's mother was born in Belfast, Ireland, and his father came from strong Scottish roots dating back several generations to the highlands of Scotland. I am very proud of my multi-cultural background.

The Miss Universe Canada pageant is wonderful opportunity to share my experiences with others and being a part of this process has already made an impact in my life.

WHAT IS YOUR PHILOSOPHY OF/IN LIFE?
We are all students on the road of life and life is only what we make of it. Everyone
should strive to make the best of every situation and learn from personal experiences.

There is a quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a famous German writer, which states,
“Knowing is not enough, you must apply. Willing is not enough we must do.” I strive to
live by this quote. We must not turn a blind eye to the local and global issues that
surround us. We all have the ability to change the lives, here and around the world, even if it's
just sharing a piece of bread.

I also strive to live by my mother's mantra, "Think you are and you will be". With the love and support of my parents, this has made me aspire to share what I do have and what I know.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO BE DOING IN 10 YEARS?
In 10 years I will still be directing documentaries about global issues and creating powerful films that change the way we see the world. I want to influence people to strive to create a better future for generations to come. I also hope to be more involved in both, local and international aid programs.

I believe children are our greatest resource and that we must collectively focus our energies into improving the communication between educators and youth. I hope to work with youth programs, concentrating on mental health, body image and literacy, three important and influential concepts that I believe need to be addressed by parents, educators and society.

Theresa Crame

AGE: 24 | HEIGHT: 5'6" | HOMETOWN: VANCOUVER, BC

Theresa Crame was born in Vancouver, but at the age of four her family moved to 100 Hundred Mile House, B.C. In town with a population of just under 5,000 people, big city life was the furthest thing from her mind. Growing up on a farm in the country was a peaceful setting where Theresa learned a sense of community, tradition, and small town ethics.

At a young age, Theresa fell in love with song and dance, which soon developed into a passion for Musical Theatre. Her family has always been very supportive of her goals, and has taken great lengths to help her pursue her dreams. Theresa spent her spare time performing in musicals, taking dance lessons and vocal training, while still finding time to sing competitively around the province. Currently, Theresa’s first passion of musical theatre has left her with a dream to one day perform on Broadway.

Theresa moved back to Vancouver at the age of twenty, where she still resides. When she is not hanging out with friends or relaxing at the beach, her time is spent developing her modeling portfolio and training at her local gym. She also enjoys taking part in as many charity events as she can, hoping to give back to other people and her community. Theresa has taken up sewing and is determined to make a career in the fashion industry, she currently is planning to take fashion design this fall at the Art Institute in Vancouver B.C.

A very passionate and friendly young woman, Theresa loves life and wishes to inspire other adolescents to believe in themselves, while remaining strong and independent. She would like to encourage other young girls to try pageantry, because of all the positive effects that it has had in her life.

My best friend Camille has influenced my life in the most positive way, she has taught me how to appreciate my family and friends everyday of my life. Camille has also taught me to strive for the best and to believe in myself because with hard work and dedication you can achieve anything.

What is the proudest personal accomplishment (other than being in this or any other beauty pageant competition)

In May of 2000, I received the Provincial Musical Theatre Champion Award. It
was one of the most exciting moments in my life and has encouraged me to continue with music and to pursue my dreams.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

I would like to own and operate a high end fashion boutique, based out of Montreal. I love fashion and enjoy making clothing. I plan to take fashion design this coming fall at the Art Institute in Vancouver, B.C. Then I would like to begin my first clothing line, specializing in evening gowns.
Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born in Vancouver, but spent the majority of my adolescence in 100 Hundred Mile House, B.C. At that time the population of our small town, was just over five thousand, so I was not accustomed to the things that are found in big city life. Our house was situated on a small farm, which instilled a hard work ethic. My family also played an integral role in my up bringing, there was never a shortage of laughter and love in my home. My mother was the one who discovered my talent for music, and encouraged me to continue my craft. I am very fortunate because my family has always been very supportive of my creative endeavours.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I have had many interesting jobs in the past which include, hair dressing, dish- washing, gardening and dog walking.

List any volunteering you have done.

I have volunteered at my local Parish, serving food for the less fortunate. I have also spent a lot of time at the local Seniors Centers, performing and entertaining during special events. This past Christmas I worked with “The Beat Cares“, accepting donations and organizing toys.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

The most interesting place I have ever been is free diving the under water caves in Xel-ha, Mexico. The water was gorgeous and the caves were incredible, an experience that was both scary and exiting all at the same time. I will never forget my fun day of adventure.

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?

My creativity and passion for performing is what makes me unique. I can honestly say I truly excel when I’m on stage in front of an audience.

What is your philosophy of/in life?

I live my life by being positive, healthy, and open minded. In the last few years I have tried new things and have had many exciting life experiences. I strive to say “Yes” to most opportunities that come my way. I feel that life is meant to be lived…so my philosophy is

Of Colombian and Venezuelan descent, Tatiana left Colombia in 1993 and immigrated to Canada with her mother and sister. Since then, the cosmopolitan city of Montreal has been her home. She recently completed her Bachelor’s degree with a major in Film Production at Concordia University and is currently studying homeopathy.

She is passionate about both creative arts and alternative medicine. In everyday life, her positive and radiant energy are, not only contagious to those around her, but also make her a very approachable person. So far, her passion and drive have taken her to unexpected and exciting places in her life and she can’t wait to see where they will take her next.

Tatiana believes in non-violence toward all sentient beings, both animal and human. Some of the causes she would like to address are discrimination and intolerance. Although she is thankful to live in such a multicultural city as Montreal, she considers there's still work to be done in improving the equal treatment of minorities whether it's based on their ethnicity, beliefs or sexual orientation.

To her, Miss Universe Canada represents the vehicle through which she can attain those goals and be a positive influence and a role model to Canada's youth. It represents the opportunity to achieve a lifelong dream of giving back to the community. She would be honoured to represent Canadian culture and values on both the national and international scenes.

Music is a passion for me! I have had training in Latin dance, specifically in merengue, salsa & bachata. I have also taken baladi and beginner tango lessons. In pursuing my passion for music, I have taken both singing and guitar introductory lessons in the past. I have also had training in filmmaking and film studies.

In what sports, if any, have you participated and how long have you participated in each sport?

I practiced figure skating for three years. I have also been practicing yoga for over three years.

And I recently completed a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with a major in film production from Concordia University. My graduation ceremony will take place in the spring 2010.

What charity/charities have you supported with your time and/or resources over past two years?

Over the past two years, I participated in a fundraiser activity for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. I have also supported the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life as well as the Red Cross in its recent efforts to offer help to the quake victims in Haiti. Less recently, I have also participated in several fashion shows with Shannon Productions in order to raise funds for the Unicef.

What would be your "dream job" in life?

I dream of having a job that would allow me to travel around the world. I would love to be able to exercise or even combine my two passions, art and alternative medicine.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life? Why?

A person whom I have always admired is Colombian singer/songwriter Shakira. As an artist, she is not afraid to be herself. It is evident in her songs that her lyrics and music come from the heart. Although her unique sound earned her a lot of negative criticism at the beginning of her career, she did not let herself be discouraged and worked hard to pursue her dream. Today, Shakira is known across the world not only for her music but also for her humanitarian work. She created the Barefoot foundation to help make education available to all children. Shakira also created Alas so that young children across Latin America can have access to health plans, education and adequate nutrition. In addition to this, the Global Campaign for Education recently named her ambassador for 1Goal, which is an international campaign promoting education. She is conscious that younger generations look up to her and she fully assumes her position as a role model. For these reasons, Shakira is an inspiration to me and I hope that one day, I can serve as a role model for Canadian youth.

What is the proudest personal accomplishment (other than being in this or any other beauty pageant competition)

My proudest accomplishment is obtaining my Bachelor’s degree. I found my undergraduate experience very fulfilling. In my opinion, a student’s life is all about exploration. You learn about your abilities, your boundaries, but mostly, about the world of possibilities that are at your disposal. Education provided me with all the necessary tools to pave a successful path for my future. Each moment I spent in the student community has been one where my eagerness to learn has grown. To me, learning is a life-long experience. Furthermore, the academic world taught me that we can all use our knowledge to make our voices heard. Filmmaking is the vehicle that will carry, not only my message, but the one of others who are not being heard.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

Now that I have completed my degree in film production, my ambition is to make documentary films to raise awareness to environmental and social issues. More specifically, I would educate people on the effects of factory farming on the environment and would also like to help visible and sexual minorities attain equality. To do so, I believe that awareness is key to help bring about positive change.

Still in the arts field, I would love to open a film school for teenager where they could express their creativity.

My other career ambition is to complete my degree in homeopathy and be able to help others though alternative medicine.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

My family and I moved from a small town in Colombia to Montreal when I was eight years old. The one thing I remember the most from day we arrived to Canada is how excited my sister and I were to see snow for the first time. I grew up in a tight and loving family being very close with my sister and mother. My mother raised my sister and I by herself and we learned very early on that she was not only assuming both parental roles but also that of an unconditional friend. She has always supported and encouraged me to be myself and I have her to thank for a beautiful childhood.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

In high school, my sister and I both got jobs as lifeguards at our city’s wading pool. Everyday we would be assigned a different pool in various parks of our neighbourhood. We had also just adopted our first puppy that summer and were so sad to be apart from him during the day, that we had one of our friends rollerblade across town to bring the puppy from park to park so we could see him during our breaks.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

I have always had a great interest for art and, during my studies at Dawson College, I took several art history courses including renaissance and modern art. I was always particularly mesmerized by Michaelangelo’s sculptures and, last summer, I had the chance to see his work in person during a trip to Florence. Aside from the wonderful art, Florence is a truly fascinating city with warm and friendly people, not to mention the scrumptious cuisine!

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?

What makes me unique is that I believe in the good in people. I believe that deep down we all want to help ease suffering in the world but unfortunately don’t always know how or where to begin. By bringing awareness to world issues, people will know where to direct their energy and efforts to contribute to the best of their capacity. I believe that each and every one of us has the potential to do accomplish great things in our lifetime.

What is your philosophy of/in life?

My philosophy in life is to practice respect, loving-kindness and to be compassionate towards all sentient beings, human and animal. I also believe that once we learn to accept each other’s differences, it becomes easier to love one another without judgment. The Dalai Lama has said, "If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. If you want to be happy, practice compassion."

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?

I hope to be working in the filmmaking industry here in Canada and abroad and that my work reaches many people and touches their lives in a positive way. I also hope to be working as a homeopath and help others to the best of my capacity.

Is there anything you would like to tell us about yourself? Something unique that has happened to you? Some interesting thing about you?

I share a very close and special relationship with animals and have four pets at home two dogs and two cats each of a different breed. I am always amazed at how much we could learn from animals: Four different animals of two different species cohabitating peacefully with each other. It is a truly beautiful thing to see.

Tanja Pooley

AGE: 21 | HEIGHT: 5'8" | HOMETOWN: SURREY, BC

Tanja was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is one of three daughters in her family. At the early age of 6 her family decided to move to a country that was full of opportunity and safety for the family. Her positive and entrepreneurial attitude comes from a lifetime of uplifting and motivating people in her life. She is forever grateful to her parents for making the decision to move to Canada and is proud to call this country Home.

She loves spending time with her family and her life long friends and is an all around joyful person. Her dedication and ambition sets her apart from others. Tanja believes everyone should live life with no regrets and live everyday to the fullest, never waste a moment.

Tanja is looking forward to her first experience in a pageant and is excited to see where this journey takes her. Becoming Miss Universe Canada would be an opportunity for her to become a role model for young Canadian women. Plans for her future include traveling, learning new cultures and experiencing new things.

What would be your "dream job" in life?

World Traveler and owning my own business to have the freedom to do what I feel.

Name one person, other than your parents, who has had the most influence on your life? Why?

My little sister Claudia. She is the most kindest, honest person I know. She has nothing bad to say about anyone and she has an amazing attitude towards life. I look up to my little sister and I don't think a lot of people can say that.

What is the proudest personal accomplishment (other than being in this or any other beauty pageant competition)

Sponsoring a child through World Vision as well as donating my hair towards cancer.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?

Owning my own online network marketing company allows me to use my people skills in building my organization as well as work for myself giving me more freedom to make my own decisions. It will take a lot of personal growth and networking which I am fully up for.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.

I was born in South Africa, moved to Canada as a young child. It was just the 5 of us so holidays in my house were very cozy. This has made my immediate family very close since we only had each other to lean on. I grew up as the middle child of 2 sisters who are my best friends. I wouldn't change my childhood for the world.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

Working for a disposal company, even though my job is in the head office, I had to go out on the big dump trucks and toilet trucks to get a feel for the entire company.

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

I believe i'm unique in the sense that I have an awesome attitude towards life and I never let anyone take my happiness from me. I have great work ethic and enjoy self growth. You will rarely see me without a smile on my face.

Summer Anne Ross

AGE: 26 | HEIGHT: 5'11" | HOMETOWN: BELLE RIVER, ON

Summer Anne Ross was born in Windsor, Ontario. She is currently completing a degree in biological sciences at the University of Windsor. Summer Anne studies the effects of aquatic invasive species on the Great Lakes. She works as a laboratory research assistant while completing her Bachelor of Science degree. She hopes to become a marine biologist and focus on the effects humans can have on the environment.

Summer Anne is of Hungarian descent and values the culture and teachings her mother has imparted upon her. She is one of four daughters and is very close to her family and friends. Summer admires her late grandmother for her aspirations and determination. Her grandmother taught her to face hardships and adversities with grace and ease and to respect everyone for their differences.

In her free time Summer Anne enjoys travelling, ballroom dancing, scuba diving, cooking and volunteering with young children. She is outgoing, enthusiastic, and determined. Summer strives to defy negative attitudes and does not believe in the notion of imposing limitations. She hopes to inspire the same beliefs in others and to be a positive image for young girls. Summer believes that the world holds many opportunities, both created and yet undiscovered. The world's possibilities are endless and Summer Anne Ross intends to be a part in any way she can.

My nagymama (grandmother) has had the most influence on my life. She was amazing and taught me to be kind, graceful, and wise. She taught me to cook and clean. Her passing has taught me more much still. I have learned empathy, how to continue when facing hardships, and have been motivated to make her proud.

I am most proud of attending University and working towards a degree.

What is your career ambition and what are you doing or plan to do to accomplish that goal?
I intend to become a marine biologist. I am finishing my degree in biological sciences. I work as a research lab assistant, studying the effects of aquatic invasive species on the great lakes systems.

Describe where you were raised and what your childhood was like.
I was raised in Windsor-Essex County, mainly in Belle River, Ontario. I have three sisters with whom I am very close. The women in my life have had a strong influence over me. I credit my mother, grandmother, and aunt for the person I am as of today. My family was very close and we very much enjoyed spending our time together.

List any interesting or unusual jobs you may have had.

I occasionally work as a standardized patient at a medical school where I simulate patient scenarios. It is improvisational and very intriguing. Working in the research lab has sent me on sampling trips. I have sampled inside of large oil tankers, inside their ballast tanks. This is a one in a life time experience as well, as only a handful of people can, and are willing to enter these confined spaces.

Neonatal Intensive care unit, Classroom aid in kindergarten class, Heart and Stroke foundation involvement

Where is the most interesting place you have been?

Halifax, Nova Scotia

What makes you unique and different from the other contestants?

I believe I am unique in many respects. I feel wise beyond my years and that I am very intuitive. I enjoy life and new experiences. I have a zest for life and a desire to help others feel the same way. I have an inviting personality and tend to interest and intrigue those I meet.

What is your philosophy of/in life?

I feel that everyone can make a difference, a large difference in this world. We must be aware of our respective places, however. There is no room for ego and self-obsession, and no need for it. Everything is based on perspective and we must remember to love those close to us, as the way to live forever is through others’ love.

What do you hope to be doing in 10 years?

I hope to have experienced different areas on the world and to have gained more perspective. To have loved others as I would like to be loved. To have a career, but know that careers and money can never equal love. To have had some sort of influence on the girls of future generations. To be as positive and optimistic then, as I am today.

Is there anything you would like to tell us about yourself? Something unique that has happened to you? Some interesting thing about you?

I have a great hope for the world and in the power of women. I like to see the world from different views. I appreciate scuba diving, as it provides another way of thinking. I would like to experience different cultures and impart my wisdom and experiences if possible.
